Investigation Officer (Major Crime Investigation Team) - Salary including allowances £36,460 to £38,629
The Major Crime Investigation Team (MCIT) investigates the region’s most complex and serious offences, including murder and other homicides, providing expert investigation, offender management, and outstanding support to victims’ families and the wider community.
As a designated Investigation Officer working within MCIT, you’ll be at the heart of this work – supporting Major Incident Room (MIR) operations, gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, managing key case material, and ensuring investigations are robust, fair and thorough.
This is a varied and rewarding role which is at times fast paced, where you’ll have the opportunity to grow in experience and capability across all areas of Major Crime investigation. Your day-to-day work will be diverse – no two investigations are ever the same.
Key responsibilities:
- Managing investigative actions and providing key updates in team briefings
- Conducting interviews, taking statements, and preparing accurate reports
- Obtaining and executing search warrants, conducting scene searches
- Supporting the Senior Investigating Officer and your wider MCIT colleagues during active investigations
- Working closely with the Crown Prosecution Service to support a court case
- Seizing and reviewing vital CCTV footage from a crime scene
- Disclosure Officer or Exhibits Officer (or deputy)
- Maintaining up-to-date records (both manual and digital)
What we are looking for:
We are seeking motivated, detail-focused, and enthusiastic investigators who are committed to delivering excellence in Major Crime investigations.
- You must hold your PiP1 (Professionalising Investigations Programme - level 1) (PiP1) or be able to complete your PiP1 portfolio by 31st March 2026
- Strong written skills – able to prepare clear, accurate statements and reports
- Computer literate – confident using manual and digital systems
- Experience of interviewing witnesses and obtaining statements
- Ability to collaborate with partner agencies and internal departments
- Willingness to travel across the region, including to Wiltshire and Gloucestershire
- A full current driving licence or ability to travel effectively across the region

Additional Information:
- Interviews are planned to take place between Monday 9th March until Wednesday 11th March 2026.
- You will work a shift pattern including early shifts from 8am until 6pm and late shifts from 2pm until 10pm. You will also work one weekend in every four, working 8am until 6pm on Saturday and Sunday.
- Work on a bank or public holiday as part of the normal working week will be compensated in line with conditions of service.
- It has been deemed that this role requires you to wear a uniform when exercising your designated powers, this will be provided for you and should be worn whenever such powers are discharged.
- The role is known as Major Crime Investigation Officer (MCIO) within the organisation.
- To be eligible to apply for this role you must have a 5 year ‘checkable history’ in the UK – ideally this means that you would have been resident in the UK for the last 5 years.
