Detective Constable Re-Joiner – CID/Public Protection (SIU)

Vacancy Information

Chief Constable Jo Shiner:

I am immensely proud and privileged to lead Sussex Police. Every day I see our teams achieving phenomenal results - preventing crime, leading successful operations and complex investigations, making arrests, and often putting themselves in danger in order to go the extra mile to keep our local communities safe. Together, we work on the following three priorities that underpin everything we do. As a member of our policing family, you will play your part to:

  • Protect our communities • Catch criminals
  • Deliver an outstanding service to victims, witnesses and the public

To protect our diverse communities, we listen and engage. Whether people are in our cities, our towns or in our villages, in person or online, residents or visitors, we work to understand community issues and concerns and demonstrate we are acting on them in both our words and actions.

We catch criminals, with prevention and deterrence as the starting point. With additional officers, skills and capacity, and working with our partners, our teams are empowered to put the public first.

And we strive to deliver an outstanding service, getting it right first time, to grow trust and confidence in Sussex Police. It is only with the help of our local communities that we can succeed in our duty to keep people safe, starting with our very first interaction, right through to the quality of the evidence we present to secure a conviction or positive outcome.

This is underpinned by a professional, healthy, diverse and inclusive workforce that take pride, and are valued, for the work they do.

We are going through considerable modernisation to transform what we do, how we operate to the highest standards, and how we improve our service to local communities. We see a Police Officer's role as a role which is more than working to reduce crime. It is now just as much about reducing the fear of crime, working in partnership with communities to make a real difference and improve the quality of life for everyone.

Sussex is one of the largest counties in the UK, and is divided into three Divisions, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex and West Sussex. The vibrant City of Brighton & Hove is a lively, diverse and rapidly expanding city, which boasts good transport links to the capital. The county also has a varied mix of smaller coastal towns and different rural communities, with some of England's most attractive countryside. Towards the north of Sussex the UK's second largest airport, Gatwick, can be found, which sees millions of passengers each year travelling to around 200 destinations worldwide.

If you were an experienced Police Constable from a Home Office force and would like to re-join and work in CID/Public Protection (SIU), then we'd like to hear from you.

The Role & Key Responsibilities

We are looking for officers who see themselves as risk managers and can make difficult decisions that stand up to scrutiny. For this, officers will need to be comfortable in using tools such as the National Decision Model and THRIVE, which help you to understand the problem, assess the risk and tackle the issues.

The problem solvers, the curious and the tenacious. People who have the desire to follow every lead, discover the truth and seek results. Emotionally resilient and compassionate, you will need to stay calm in the face of adversity and build relationships with those who may be the victim or witness of a serious or violent crime. You will have to critically analyse the evidence, establishing the facts which will be used to obtain justice in court.

Our CID teams carry out proactive investigations into complex and serious crimes across the county. These are located in Brighton, Chichester, Crawley, Eastbourne, Hastings and Worthing.

The Safeguarding Investigations Units sit within our Public Protection Department and conduct specialist investigations which pursue those who target and exploit the most vulnerable within our society. They undertake specialist safeguarding and work with our partners to protect those who are at the greatest risk. These teams are based in Brighton, Crawley, Eastbourne, Hastings and Littlehampton.

Your application form and learning needs questionnaire will be reviewed prior to being offered an interview and will help determine the most suitable entry route.
